Pom Pom Crabs molt throughout their lives because a rigid exoskeleton cannot expand continuously as the animal grows. Younger crabs usually molt more often than mature adults, while the exact interval varies with age, temperature, diet and growth rate. There is no reliable calendar that every crab follows.
For keepers, the most important part is recognizing a normal molt, providing secure cover and keeping water chemistry stable enough that the crab can harden its new shell without additional stress.
What Happens During a Crab Molt?
Before molting, the crab forms a new soft exoskeleton beneath the old one and begins separating from the hardened shell. The old exoskeleton splits and the crab carefully extracts its legs, claws and body. The process can look alarming because the shed shell preserves almost every external detail.
After emerging, the new exoskeleton is soft. The crab absorbs water, expands the new shell and gradually hardens it using minerals available from its body reserves, food and surrounding water.
Why Molts Look Like Dead Crabs
A complete molt can look like a perfect crab lying motionless on the substrate. Before assuming the crab died, look for a hollow interior and a split in the shell. The living animal may be hidden only a few inches away.
Do not tear apart the tank searching immediately. Freshly molted crabs often remain concealed until the shell hardens.
How Often Do Juveniles Molt?
Young crabs grow faster and therefore shed more frequently. Depending on conditions, a juvenile may molt several times over a relatively short growth period. As adult size approaches, growth slows and intervals typically become longer.
A molt interval that changes with age is normal. Repeated failed molts or sudden deaths around molting are more important than the exact number of days between successful sheds.
Temperature and Molting
Warmer water generally increases metabolism and growth rate, which can shorten the time between molts. That is not a reason to run the aquarium hot. Warm water also holds less dissolved oxygen and can increase physiological demand.
Maintain a stable suitable temperature rather than manipulating heat to force growth.
GH, KH and Mineral Availability
Crustaceans need calcium and other minerals for exoskeleton formation. GH is a useful measurement of calcium and magnesium in freshwater. Extremely soft, demineralized water can be problematic, especially when paired with unstable pH.
KH supports buffering and helps keep pH predictable. TDS can show whether dissolved material is drifting, but it cannot tell you exactly which minerals are present.
Do Not Add Calcium Blindly
A failed molt does not automatically mean calcium deficiency. High TDS, large water changes, sudden temperature shifts, low oxygen, poor diet and stress can all complicate the process. Test GH and review the whole system before adding mineral products.
If GH is genuinely too low because you use RO or distilled water, a measured remineralization product gives more control than random shells, blocks or powders.
Why Water Changes Can Trigger Molts
Changes in temperature and dissolved solids can act as environmental cues. It is common to find molts after a water change. A normal molt afterward is not necessarily a problem.
The risk comes from a large mismatched water change that triggers molting while the crab is already under osmotic stress. Match replacement water as closely as practical.
Should You Remove the Old Exoskeleton?
Usually no. Crabs, shrimp and snails may graze the shed shell and recover some minerals and organic material. In a healthy tank, leaving a clean molt for a few days is fine.
Remove it if you are managing a contagious disease or if it remains untouched and begins collecting waste.
Give the Crab Safe Post-Molt Cover
Freshly molted crabs are vulnerable to fish, other crustaceans and even accidental disturbance. Dense moss, leaf litter, wood and stable rock crevices give the animal time to harden.
Avoid moving hardscape while a crab is hidden after a suspected molt. You are more likely to injure it than help it.
Signs of a Possible Failed Molt
A crab may appear partly trapped in the shell, unable to stand, weak at the body split or unresponsive after an incomplete shed. If failures occur repeatedly, test ammonia, nitrite, GH, KH, TDS and temperature and review recent water changes.

Molting and Growth Are Closely Linked
