How to Perform Safe Water Changes on a Pom Pom Crab Nano Tank

Safe Pom Pom Crab water changes are about consistency, not avoiding maintenance. Condition the new water, match temperature reasonably closely and prevent large sudden changes in pH, GH, KH, TDS or salinity. Why Nano Tanks Change Quickly

Five gallons has very little dilution capacity compared with a large aquarium. A cup of evaporation, an extra wafer or a bucket of different-temperature replacement water represents a meaningful percentage of the system.

That does not make nano tanks impossible. It means measurements and repeatable routines have more value.

How Much Water Should You Change?

There is no single percentage required for every tank. Stocking, feeding, nitrate production, plants and source water determine the schedule. Moderate routine changes are a practical baseline, while emergency ammonia or contaminant events may justify larger dilution.

Match Temperature

Replacement water does not need laboratory precision, but avoid large sudden temperature differences. Use a thermometer when tap temperature changes seasonally.

Never pour very cold water directly onto a crab in a warm aquarium.

Condition Municipal Water

Tap water may contain chlorine or chloramine. Use a conditioner designed for your water supply and dose it correctly. If you use well water, disinfectant may not be present, but hardness, metals and other chemistry should still be understood.

If the tank is normally 160 ppm and the new water is 400 ppm, investigate before performing a large routine change.

Evaporation Is Not a Water Change

When water evaporates, most dissolved minerals remain behind. Topping off restores volume but does not remove accumulated dissolved material. In mineral-rich water, repeated top-offs can push TDS upward over time.

Use true water changes to export dissolved waste and top-offs only to replace evaporated water.

Add New Water Gently

Pour slowly or use tubing or a small pump. The goal is to avoid exposing the crab to a concentrated plume of different temperature and chemistry.

A change in temperature or chemistry can act as a molting cue. Finding a normal empty molt after maintenance is not automatically a problem. The concern is a large mismatched change that triggers molting while the crab is already stressed.

Clean Without Sterilizing

Siphon concentrated waste from open substrate while leaving useful biofilm on wood and plants. Rinse clogged sponge media gently in removed aquarium water or conditioned water.

Do not replace all biological media, deep-clean the substrate and perform a massive water change on the same day unless an emergency requires it.

Watch the Crab After Maintenance

Normal behavior should return to hiding and foraging. If multiple crabs become frantic, climb out of the water, lose coordination or remain motionless, review the new water immediately.
