Salinity deserves extra explanation because aquarium-trade Freshwater Pom Pom Crabs are usually sold as Ptychognathus barbatus, yet recent taxonomy shows that several East/Southeast Asian populations historically identified that way belong to other Ptychognathus species associated with estuaries and freshwater-influenced coastal zones. The practical takeaway is to avoid abrupt salinity manipulation and keep the crab in the stable system it is adapted to unless you have a specific, measured husbandry reason to change it.

Temperature: Aim for Stability Around 72–78°F

Temperature controls metabolism, oxygen availability and the speed at which biological processes occur. Water near the middle of the 70s Fahrenheit is a practical target for many aquarium-trade Pom Pom Crabs. A stable 74°F aquarium is generally preferable to a tank swinging from the upper 60s at night to the low 80s during the day.

Warm water holds less dissolved oxygen, so do not raise temperature simply to make a tropical tank “extra warm.” In summer, improve airflow across the surface and verify that filters are moving water normally. In winter, a thermostatic heater is useful when room temperature cannot keep the tank within a stable range.

pH: Stability Beats Chasing One Exact Number

Near-neutral to mildly alkaline water is a practical aquarium target. If your tap water consistently sits within the usable range and the animals are doing well, repeated chemical correction may create more stress than benefit. Products marketed as pH-up or pH-down can produce abrupt swings when KH is low.

Measure pH at roughly the same time of day when comparing readings because planted tanks can show daily movement as carbon dioxide changes. A one-time reading matters less than a consistent trend.

GH and Exoskeleton Health

General hardness primarily reflects calcium and magnesium ions in freshwater. Crustaceans require minerals to build and harden exoskeletons, so extremely soft demineralized water is not an ideal default. That does not mean “more GH is always better.” Excessive mineral addition raises dissolved solids and can make water changes harder to match.

If you use RO or distilled water, remineralize it with a measured product before it enters the tank. Record the amount required to reproduce the same GH on future water changes.

KH and pH Buffering

KH reflects carbonate buffering and helps resist rapid pH change. In a tiny aquarium with low KH, organic acids and biological activity can move pH faster than expected. A measurable, stable KH is useful for most straightforward Pom Pom Crab setups.

Active aquasoils can intentionally reduce KH. If you use one for plants, understand its effect instead of trying to force the tank upward with repeated additives.

TDS: Useful Trend, Not a Complete Water Test

Total dissolved solids gives a quick estimate of dissolved ionic material, but it does not tell you what those ions are. Two water sources can both read 180 ppm TDS while containing very different mineral compositions. Use TDS alongside GH, KH and pH.

Its strongest value is consistency. If the tank is normally 160 ppm and replacement water suddenly reads 400 ppm, stop and investigate before performing a large routine water change.

Ammonia and Nitrite Must Be Zero

A crab tank should be fully cycled. Ammonia and nitrite should remain at 0 ppm under normal operation. Never add Pom Pom Crabs to a brand-new aquarium merely because it contains algae or clear water. Appearance does not indicate nitrogen-processing capacity.

If ammonia or nitrite is detected after livestock are present, reduce feeding, verify filter operation and perform appropriate conditioned water changes. Correct the cause rather than relying solely on detoxifying products.

Nitrate and Organic Waste

Nitrate is less acutely toxic than ammonia or nitrite but should remain controlled. Plants can consume some nitrate, while regular water changes remove both nitrate and other dissolved waste. There is no benefit to waiting for a nano tank to become visibly dirty before maintenance.

Because the crab spends time on the substrate, remove food that decomposes in dead zones. Strong biological filtration cannot compensate indefinitely for chronic overfeeding.

The Salinity Question

The common name “freshwater Pom Pom Crab” suggests a simple answer, but Ptychognathus is a genus strongly associated with coastal, estuarine and freshwater-influenced habitats. Aquarium-trade identification is also not perfectly resolved. A 2025 peer-reviewed revision showed that many Asian records formerly attributed to P. barbatus actually belong to the newly described P. dajie.

For an aquarium animal that has been maintained successfully in freshwater, do not suddenly add marine salt because a generalized care page says the genus can occur in brackish water. If you deliberately choose low-end brackish husbandry, use marine aquarium salt, measure salinity with a refractometer or calibrated conductivity tool, and transition gradually. Do not use table salt or guess by teaspoons.

Why “Aquarium Salt” Is Not a Salinity Plan

Freshwater aquarium salt is often primarily sodium chloride. Marine salt mixes contain a broader suite of ions designed to create seawater-like chemistry. If the goal is true brackish water, use a marine mix and measure the result rather than sprinkling arbitrary salt into the display.

Never move animals repeatedly between fresh and brackish water as an experiment. Stability and acclimation matter more than chasing a theoretical number.

Water Changes and Parameter Matching

Prepare new water before it reaches the tank. Match temperature reasonably closely and compare GH, KH and TDS when you use a custom water source. Add replacement water gently so the crab is not exposed to a concentrated plume of different chemistry.
