Amano shrimp are a relatively large freshwater aquarium shrimp native to East Asia. They are often listed under the older scientific name Caridina japonica, but the currently accepted name is Caridina multidentata. Adults commonly reach roughly 1.5 to 2 inches, making them noticeably larger than most Cherry Shrimp and other Neocaridina. Their translucent gray-to-tan bodies are patterned with small dots or dashes along the sides, and mature females tend to become larger and fuller-bodied than males.

Their aquarium popularity is tied closely to planted-tank culture. Choose a mature aquarium, not just a newly filled tank

What should you feed Amano shrimp?

Amano shrimp are famous algae eaters, but they should not be expected to live on algae alone. They are opportunistic omnivorous scavengers. In a mature planted aquarium they will graze biofilm, soft algae, tiny organic particles, and leftovers, but a clean tank or a large Amano group may not produce enough natural food every day.

Offer small amounts of quality sinking food when natural grazing is limited. Shrimp wafers, algae wafers, quality bottom-feeder foods, and occasional blanched vegetables can all be useful. In community tanks, make sure food actually reaches the bottom. How good are Amano shrimp at eating algae?

They are especially useful against soft films, filamentous growth, and many forms of hair or thread algae. They may pick at black beard algae under some conditions, particularly when it is young or weakened, but they are not guaranteed to erase every established patch. Hard green spot algae on glass and old leaves is generally a different challenge and is often handled better with scraping, snails, plant pruning, and correction of the conditions that produced it.

Adult Amanos are larger than most dwarf shrimp, but they are still prey-sized animals to many fish. Peaceful nano fish and small community species are generally safer than large cichlids, puffers, aggressive barbs, or fish known to hunt crustaceans. Even a fish that cannot swallow an adult Amano whole may injure a newly molted shrimp.

Acclimating new Amano shrimp

Shipping water and aquarium water can differ in temperature, pH, hardness, and dissolved solids. Moving shrimp directly between very different conditions can create osmotic stress. A controlled acclimation lets the shrimp experience those changes gradually. Avoid leaving them for excessive periods in deteriorating shipping water, and do not pour a large volume of shipping water into the display tank.

Amano shrimp are capable climbers. Airline tubing, filter pipes, cords, plant leaves, and silicone seams can give them access to the top of the aquarium. A tight-fitting lid is therefore useful, especially immediately after introduction or whenever equipment creates large openings around the back of the tank.

Escape attempts can also be information. One wandering shrimp does not necessarily mean the water is bad, but several shrimp suddenly gathering near the surface or trying to leave should prompt a water-quality check. Can Amano shrimp breed in freshwater?

Adult Amano shrimp live very well in freshwater and females may carry large numbers of eggs there. The complication comes after hatching. Amano shrimp have an amphidromous life history: the tiny larvae require a saline phase before metamorphosing into juveniles that can return to freshwater. A 2021 laboratory study in Crustacean Research found C. multidentata larvae successfully adapted across a relatively broad salinity range in the higher-salinity treatments, reinforcing why normal freshwater shrimp-breeding methods do not work for this species.

Good Amano care is mostly consistent routine. Observe the shrimp every day, remove obvious excess food, keep the filter running reliably, prune decaying plant material, and perform partial water changes based on stocking and nitrate accumulation. New water should be dechlorinated and reasonably close to the aquarium in temperature and mineral content.

Large emergency corrections can be necessary when ammonia or nitrite is present, but routine maintenance should not repeatedly swing the tank between very different chemistry. How many Amano shrimp should I keep?
