A new tank does not contain enough established nitrifying biomass to process a full livestock load immediately. A filter may be running and water may look crystal clear while ammonia processing is still inadequate. That is why appearance alone cannot confirm that a tank is cycled.
Why Amano shrimp should not be used to cycle a tank
Amano shrimp are hardy compared with many ornamental shrimp, but they should not be intentionally exposed to ammonia or nitrite to establish a cycle. Fish-in or shrimp-in cycling makes living animals absorb the consequences of an immature biofilter.
