Can Amano Shrimp Breed in Freshwater? The Truth About Their Larvae

Quick answer: Amano shrimp can mate, carry eggs and hatch larvae in freshwater, but those larvae normally cannot complete development in a standard freshwater aquarium. Unlike Cherry Shrimp, Amano eggs hatch into tiny free-swimming larvae rather than miniature bottom-dwelling shrimp. The larval stage requires a substantial saline phase before the young shrimp metamorphose and return to freshwater.

This is why a healthy berried Amano female can carry hundreds of eggs in a planted tank without that aquarium eventually filling with baby Amanos. The adults are freshwater animals; the early larvae have a different developmental requirement.

What does “breed in freshwater” actually mean?

The phrase can be confusing because several parts of Amano reproduction do happen in freshwater. Adult males and females live and mate in freshwater. Females develop eggs and carry them under the abdomen in freshwater. Hatching can also occur in freshwater.

The failure point is larval development after hatching. The tiny larvae remain suspended in the water column and need saline conditions to progress through their larval stages successfully.

How Amano shrimp differ from Cherry Shrimp

Cherry Shrimp and other Neocaridina use direct development. Their eggs hatch into miniature shrimp that immediately crawl on surfaces and graze biofilm. Those babies can remain in the same freshwater aquarium as their parents.

Amano shrimp use a more complex amphidromous life cycle. Their larvae are planktonic and naturally associated with movement downstream toward estuarine and marine-influenced water. After metamorphosis, the juveniles return to freshwater.

That one biological difference explains why Neocaridina colonies can multiply rapidly in ordinary shrimp tanks while Amanos usually do not.

What does a berried Amano female look like?

A mature female carries a large mass of tiny eggs beneath the abdomen, attached to the swimmerets. Amano eggs are much smaller and more numerous than typical Neocaridina eggs. As development progresses, the egg mass can change color and tiny dark eye spots may become visible.

The female fans and cleans the eggs until hatching. Keep her in normal stable freshwater during this period.

Should you add salt to the adult aquarium?

No. Do not convert a planted Amano display into brackish water simply because a female is berried. Adult Amanos are maintained in freshwater, and the fish, plants, snails and biological community in the tank may not tolerate a large salinity increase.

What happens when the larvae hatch?

Newly hatched Amano larvae are extremely small and behave very differently from adult shrimp. They remain in the water column instead of immediately settling onto the substrate. Many are attracted toward light, which can help breeders collect them.

In a normal community aquarium, larvae face several problems at once: freshwater is not a complete developmental environment, filters can remove them, fish may eat them and the tank may not contain the suspended microscopic foods they need.

How long can Amano larvae survive in freshwater?

Exact survival time varies with temperature and condition, and the useful breeding question is not how long they can remain alive but whether they can complete development. Research on Caridina multidentata shows successful development under elevated salinity rather than freshwater alone.

For a serious breeding attempt, collect larvae promptly after hatching and move them to a prepared saline system rather than waiting for visible losses.

What salinity do Amano larvae need?

There is not one universal magic number. A 2021 study in Crustacean Research tested multiple salinities and found successful development to juveniles across roughly 17–34 ppt under its experimental conditions. Other larviculture work has reported strong results near marine-strength salinity.

The practical lesson is that larvae need a substantial saline phase and that salinity must be measured. “A little aquarium salt” is not a reliable breeding protocol.

What food do the larvae need?

Because the larvae are planktonic, they need very small suspended food. Breeders commonly use microalgae or phytoplankton cultures, very fine spirulina-based foods or specialized larval feeds. Food must remain available in the water column without being added so heavily that it causes ammonia or oxygen problems.

When do juveniles return to freshwater?

Successful larvae eventually metamorphose into small juvenile shrimp. Their behavior changes from drifting in the water column to settling and moving more like miniature adults. At that stage the salinity can be reduced gradually and the juveniles transitioned back toward freshwater.

Do not move them directly from high salinity to freshwater in one abrupt step. Gradual transition reduces osmotic stress.

Why home breeding is challenging

Amano breeding is difficult because the breeder has to manage several stages with different requirements:

  • Healthy freshwater adults
  • A berried female carrying eggs
  • Precise timing around hatching
  • Collection of tiny larvae
  • A separate saline rearing system
  • Microscopic suspended food
  • Frequent water-quality observation
  • Metamorphosis and return to freshwater

Missing any one of these can reduce survival. That is why Amano shrimp remain much less likely to reproduce accidentally in a home aquarium than Neocaridina.

Can Amanos reproduce in a brackish display tank?
