What Do Blue Red Rili Shrimp Look Like?

Blue Red Rili Shrimp, often called Blue Razz Shrimp, typically display red sections or patches over a blue to bluish-translucent body. The exact balance of blue, red, and clear coloration can vary considerably between individuals.

Age, sex, genetics, lighting, substrate, aquarium background, and individual lineage can all affect how strong the colors appear.

Important Genetics Note: This line may not breed true with complete consistency. Offspring can vary in the amount, tone, and placement of blue and red coloration. Hobbyists breeding specifically for this look should expect to selectively retain the offspring that best match their preferred pattern and color intensity.

Blue Red Rili Shrimp Water Parameters

Blue Red Rili Shrimp are Neocaridina and generally perform best when water chemistry stays stable rather than being constantly adjusted. The ranges below reflect our Neocaridina systems.

Parameter Our Tank Range
pH 7.0–7.8
GH 7–8
KH 3–4
TDS 200–250 ppm
Temperature 65–74°F
Ammonia 0 ppm
Nitrite 0 ppm

Avoid sudden changes in temperature, pH, hardness, or TDS. A fully cycled aquarium with mature biological filtration and consistent maintenance matters more than chasing one exact number.

For more detail, read our Neocaridina Shrimp Water Parameters Guide.

Best Tank Setup for Blue Red Rili Shrimp

Mature, Cycled Aquarium

Blue Red Rili Shrimp should be introduced to a fully cycled aquarium with stable water quality. Mature tanks also provide more biofilm and microorganisms for constant grazing.

Plants, Moss & Hardscape

Plants, moss, wood, leaves, and aquarium-safe rock increase grazing area and provide cover during molts. Dense moss is especially useful for newborn shrimplets. Browse our live aquarium plants for shrimp-friendly setups.

Gentle Filtration

Sponge filters are ideal for many shrimp tanks because they provide gentle water movement, biological filtration, and extra grazing surface without exposing baby shrimp to an unprotected intake.

What Do Blue Red Rili Shrimp Eat?

Blue Red Rili Shrimp spend much of the day grazing biofilm, microorganisms, soft algae films, decaying organic material, and small food particles. Supplemental feeding becomes especially useful in cleaner aquariums or larger colonies.

Food Source Role in the Aquarium
Biofilm Important natural grazing source in mature tanks
Soft algae films Frequently grazed from hardscape, plants, and glass
Shrimp foods / wafers Useful supplemental nutrition for established colonies
Botanicals / leaves Add grazing surface and slowly decomposing organic material
Blanched vegetables Optional occasional supplemental food

Feed conservatively and remove excess food before it begins to affect water quality. Browse our shrimp food and botanicals for supplemental feeding options.

Breeding Blue Red Rili Shrimp

Blue Red Rili Shrimp reproduce completely in freshwater. Mature females carry fertilized eggs beneath the abdomen until fully formed baby shrimp hatch directly into the aquarium.

Because this color line can produce variable offspring, breeding for a consistent Blue Razz appearance may require ongoing selection. If your goal is to strengthen the line, keep the colony separate from other Neocaridina colors and selectively retain offspring with the blue-and-red combination you prefer.

Breeder Pack: Our Blue Red Rili Breeder Pack includes 10 breeding-age shrimp with approximately 7 females and 3 males, providing a female-heavy starting ratio for hobbyists focused on establishing a colony.

For general breeding fundamentals, read our Neocaridina Shrimp Breeding Guide.

Blue Red Rili Shrimp vs. Red Rili Shrimp

Trait Blue Red Rili / Blue Razz Red Rili Shrimp
Typical appearance Red patterning with blue to bluish-translucent coloration Red sections separated by translucent or clear areas
Species type Neocaridina Neocaridina
Care level Beginner-friendly Beginner-friendly
Freshwater breeding Yes Yes
Color-line consistency Can produce variable offspring Generally selected around the established red-and-clear Rili pattern

If you prefer the classic red-and-clear pattern, view our Red Rili Shrimp.

Can Blue Red Rili Shrimp Live With Other Neocaridina?

Different Neocaridina color lines can generally live together peacefully, but they can interbreed. Mixing colors will make offspring less predictable and can make it harder to maintain the Blue Red Rili appearance over future generations.

If your goal is selective breeding for the Blue Razz pattern, keep this colony separate from other Neocaridina morphs.

Blue Red Rili Shrimp Tank Mates

Blue Red Rili Shrimp are peaceful. Snails and other non-aggressive invertebrates are commonly compatible, while some small peaceful fish can work in heavily planted tanks. However, nearly any fish may eat baby shrimp if shrimplets are small enough to fit in its mouth.

For maximum breeding success and shrimplet survival, a dedicated shrimp tank is the safest option.

Blue Red Rili Shrimp FAQ

Are Blue Red Rili Shrimp the same as Blue Razz Shrimp?

Yes. Blue Razz is another hobby name used for this blue-and-red patterned Neocaridina line.

Are Blue Red Rili Shrimp Neocaridina?

Yes. They are a Neocaridina color line and share the same general freshwater care requirements as other Neocaridina shrimp.

How big are Blue Red Rili Shrimp when shipped?

Our Blue Red Rili Shrimp are approximately 1/2 to 1 inch and are sold at breeding age.

Are Blue Red Rili Shrimp good for beginners?

Yes. Their basic care is beginner-friendly when they are kept in a mature, fully cycled aquarium with stable water chemistry.

What water parameters do Blue Red Rili Shrimp need?

Our Neocaridina systems run around pH 7.0–7.8, GH 7–8, KH 3–4, TDS 200–250 ppm, and 65–74°F. Stability matters more than chasing exact values.

Will Blue Red Rili Shrimp breed in freshwater?

Yes. Their entire reproductive cycle occurs in freshwater, and mature females carry eggs until fully formed shrimplets hatch.

Do Blue Red Rili Shrimp breed true?

Not always. This line can produce offspring with noticeable variation in red, blue, and translucent coloration, so selective breeding may be needed to maintain a preferred Blue Razz look.

What comes in the Blue Red Rili Breeder Pack?

The Breeder Pack includes 10 breeding-age shrimp with approximately 7 females and 3 males.

What is the difference between Blue Red Rili and Red Rili Shrimp?

Blue Red Rili Shrimp combine red patterning with blue to bluish-translucent coloration, while classic Red Rili Shrimp are primarily red and clear.

Can Blue Red Rili Shrimp live with other Neocaridina?

Yes, but they can interbreed with other Neocaridina color lines. Keep them separate if maintaining or refining the Blue Razz pattern is important.

Can Blue Red Rili Shrimp live with fish?

They can live with some small peaceful fish, but fish may prey on newborn shrimplets. A dedicated shrimp tank gives the best breeding and survival rates.

Do Blue Red Rili Shrimp eat algae?

They graze on soft algae films and biofilm, but they are not a complete algae-control solution. Proper lighting, nutrient management, filtration, and maintenance still matter.

Do Blue Red Rili Shrimp need a heater or filter?

A heater is not always necessary if room temperature remains consistently suitable. A mature biological filter is strongly recommended, with sponge filtration being especially shrimp-friendly.

Customer photo review of Blue Red Rili Shrimp (Blue Razz Shrimp) "NEW"

First off, I was totally stoked to see that you sent eight of them instead of five but 4 of them died within a few days even though I did a drip acclimation over a 3 hour period. My parameters are good on my tank, temp is steady 74, ammonia is 0, nitrites- 0 ppm and nitrates are 15 ppm and the tank was fully cycled for 2 months prior to adding them. I haven’t seen them really take on that blue yet and still seems to be red and white still. Hopefully they will settle in more sooner and show that blue too.

Customer photo review of Blue Red Rili Shrimp (Blue Razz Shrimp) "NEW"

Overall these shrimp are really nice and they seem healthy. I am pleased with them and would likely order again, however there is an issue with coloring. Cons: Blue is not very vibrant. If you are expecting your shrimp to be vibrant blue and red like the picture, you are likely to be disappointed. I ordered a breeder pack, and received 8 red and blue rilis, one regular red rili, and one blue shrimp. The red blue rilis are vibrant red, but the blue is washed out to the point that I can't see it when they are in my aquarium. That is with an RGB full spectrum light. I waited 3 weeks to see if they would adjust and color up as they got more comfortable. They are out and about often now, but don't seem any more blue than before. Pros: They seem very healthy. A different shrimp order in this same package had a DOA, but all the cherry shrimp were healthy and the other shrimp did not seem stressed. I had two cherry shrimp die after drip acclimating them for several hours. I expected one or two shrimp to die as they were shipped across the country and the water parameters are likely to be very different. Also, one of the deaths was my fault, as the shrimp jumped out of my net into cold water and I could not get it back out right way. I'm pretty sure it died of cold shock later that night. The other shrimp looked like a failed molt a few days later. I decided to hold off on reaching out about the deaths and miscolored shrimp as I was overall pleased with the numbers and I received two berried females and wanted to see how that would pan out. I can say that as of today I have at least 10 baby rili shrimp the size of a grain of rice, so the females were healthy enough to withstand the shipping and adjustment phase while carrying eggs.

6 stars if I could! I ordered the breeders pack expecting only 10 shrimp, as it's advertised. I ended up receiving 14 alongside my 2 Pom Pom crabs. All arrived alive from Michigan to California with great packaging protecting them. 2 however were not the same color, one was translucent as another one was fully red, but that left me with 12 of the Blue razz shrimps, more than I was expecting and bought. would definitely buy from here again!

I got sent a batch of the breeding pack blue razz and unfortunately due to inclement weather only four of them made it to Oregon alive, but within a week the proprietor made everything right and he picked me out some of the most vibrant bluish looking shrimp you could find including some excellent females and replaced the six shrimp within three days of getting my message. I'm pleased just punch and I couldn't recommend this establishment more!

Very happy with the speed if delivery, they also sent 2 extra incase of DOA which I didn't experience and I live in S Florida. They're all seem healthy. Would rate 5 stars if even just 1 shrimp had coloration like the pictures shown online. Most are very dull colored with no noticeable blue. Now I know what to expect next time..but I will buy from them again 👍

He's tiny but cute. I also got 8 Galaxy Rasboras (received 12, I think lol), 8 Chili Rasbora's (1 arrived dead, one is about to die, but with those two I only count 7?), 20 Skittles Pack (too many to try and count, 1 orange was dead on arrival and one is floating on it's back in the tank), 1 Green Rili Shrimp, 1 Green Jade Shrimp (which I haven't found yet), and 1 Blue Red Rili Shrimp (received 2). I will say that I got a huge Blue Shrimp which my son was super pleased with lol. Colors are very light, I almost couldn't tell they were Blue Red Rili. But I am sure they will darken up once they've settled in.

All my shrimp got here healthy and they look good. I will say that they are not anywhere close to the coloring showed in the photo. They have a slight blue tent but they’re basically red rilli, not really worth the extra 5 or so bucks for pretty much the same shrimp. I’m happy I have them and they are pretty, but they are kinda falsely advertised lol
