Why Do Freshwater Pom Pom Crabs Have Fuzzy Claws? How Their “Pom Poms” Actually Work

The “pom poms” on a Freshwater Pom Pom Crab are fuzzy setae—dense hair-like structures associated with the claws—not sea anemones. The crab waves, brushes and picks with these structures while foraging, helping it collect fine particles and food from surfaces and the water around it.

This distinction matters because two completely different aquarium animals share the Pom Pom Crab common name. What Are Setae?

Are the Fuzzy Claws Sensitive?

Setae can include sensory structures, and the appendages themselves are delicate. Avoid trying to touch, trim or clean the fuzzy areas manually. If debris becomes trapped, the crab can groom itself.

Never pull a crab by a claw when moving it. Crustaceans can shed limbs under severe stress, and the damage is avoidable.

What Happens to the Fuzz During Molting?
