If an individual Skittles shrimp suddenly looks duller, the cause is often temporary appearance change rather than genetic reversion. Stress, recent shipping, molt stage, lighting, background color, age, nutrition and illness can all change how intense a shrimp looks.

Stress Can Temporarily Fade Color
Shipping, netting, a new aquarium, sudden water changes or aggressive tank mates can make Neocaridina appear washed out. If the shrimp recently arrived, focus on stable acclimation and normal behavior rather than trying to force color with additives.

Molting Changes Appearance
Before and after a molt, the shell can look different in opacity and saturation. A shrimp preparing to shed may become less active or hide. After the new exoskeleton hardens, color often looks more normal again.

Substrate and Lighting Change What Your Eye Sees
A shrimp can appear more saturated against dark substrate and washed out against a bright reflective background. Lighting spectrum, intensity, camera exposure and surrounding plants also change visual contrast.

Age and Sex Matter

Nutrition Supports Normal Pigmentation
A balanced diet supports overall health and normal pigmentation, but food cannot permanently turn genetically pale shrimp into a high-grade color line. Preserve biofilm and use varied quality foods without overfeeding.
When Fading Can Signal a Problem
Color loss deserves more attention when it appears together with lethargy, loss of balance, poor feeding, rapid breathing, failed molts or sudden deaths. Check ammonia, nitrite, temperature, GH, KH and recent maintenance changes before reaching for medication.

Did my blue shrimp genetically turn brown?
Not because it lived with other colors. Temporary fading can affect an adult, while mixed breeding changes the appearance of descendants.
Can dark substrate make color stronger?
It can improve contrast and may influence visible pigment expression, but it does not make a mixed genetic line pure.
Should I cull a faded shrimp immediately?
No. First determine whether the change is temporary, environmental or health-related. Cull for breeding goals only after phenotype is reliably established.
