A white split around a shrimp's body just behind the head is often called the white ring of death when the animal cannot complete its molt. In a multi-color Neocaridina tank, repeated failed molts across several colors should make you investigate the shared environment first.
A blue, red and yellow shrimp do not need different molting water because of their color. If multiple animals struggle after the same maintenance event, look closely at GH, replacement-water chemistry, TDS change, temperature and overall stability.

What the White Ring Actually Is
During a normal molt, the old exoskeleton separates and the shrimp escapes through a split behind the head. A visible pale band can be part of that separation. The dangerous situation is when the shrimp remains trapped, weakens and dies before completing the molt.

Check GH and Mineral Balance
Neocaridina rely on dissolved minerals to rebuild and harden the new exoskeleton. GH gives you useful information about calcium and magnesium hardness, while TDS alone cannot tell you which minerals are present.

Look for Abrupt Osmotic Change
A tank can have acceptable readings and still experience a damaging jump. Large water changes with replacement water that differs sharply in temperature, GH, KH or TDS can create osmotic stress. Evaporation followed by an incorrect top-off can also change dissolved-solids concentration.

Do Not Force Molting With Water Changes
Some keepers intentionally create large changes because molts sometimes follow environmental shifts. That is not a safe treatment for a struggling colony. The objective is stable, appropriate water that lets the shrimp molt on their natural schedule.
Could Diet Be Involved?
Nutrition supports normal growth and mineral metabolism, but molting is not fixed by dumping calcium powder into the tank. A varied shrimp diet, biofilm and appropriate water mineral content work together. Excess supplements can alter water chemistry without addressing the actual cause.

When One Shrimp Fails vs. Many
One old, injured or compromised shrimp can fail a molt even in a successful colony. Repeated failures across several animals are more informative. Track timing: did they follow a water change, remineralizer switch, source-water change, heater issue or major tank cleaning?
