How to Set Up a Low-Tech, No-Filter Nano Bowl for Skittles

A no-filter Skittles shrimp bowl can work, but it is not easier simply because it has less equipment. Removing the filter also removes a major source of water movement, oxygenation and biological surface area. Success depends on low stocking, mature plants, abundant biofilm and conservative feeding.

For a beginner's first shrimp system, a small aquarium with a sponge filter is more forgiving. Treat the no-filter bowl as a deliberately balanced low-tech setup, not a shortcut around cycling.

Choose More Water Volume Than the Minimum

Larger bowls are more stable than tiny jars. Evaporation changes dissolved-solids concentration faster in very small volumes, and a single overfeeding event can represent a large nutrient load.

Leave enough surface area for gas exchange and avoid narrow-neck vessels.

Use Lots of Easy Plants

Fast-growing stems, moss, floating plants and hardy epiphytes provide surface area and nutrient uptake. They also create shaded microhabitats and grazing zones for shrimplets.

Cycle and Mature the Bowl

A no-filter bowl still needs microbial processing of ammonia. Bacteria colonize substrate, plants, wood and every submerged surface. Allow the system to establish before stocking and verify ammonia and nitrite are zero.

Stock Lightly

Start with fewer shrimp than you would place in a filtered aquarium of the same volume. Reproduction can increase density quickly, so the bowl's successful first month does not guarantee it can handle the population six months later.

Watch Oxygen Closely

Plants produce oxygen under light but consume oxygen in darkness, as do shrimp and microbes. Warm water, heavy organic decomposition and dense nighttime respiration can all reduce dissolved oxygen. Surface agitation is limited in a still bowl.

If shrimp gather unusually high in the vessel or become lethargic, do not ignore oxygen as a possible factor.

Feed Very Conservatively

In a mature bowl, shrimp should spend most of the day grazing natural surfaces. Heavy feeding creates more decomposition than a no-filter system can easily process. Start with tiny supplemental portions and adjust to colony size.

Water Changes Still Matter

No-filter does not mean no maintenance. Replace water when needed using closely matched temperature and mineral chemistry. In a very small vessel, even a seemingly modest cup can represent a large percentage of total volume.

Do You Need a Heater?

Only if the room cannot maintain stable appropriate temperatures. Because bowls have low water volume, avoid oversized heaters that can overheat the system rapidly if something goes wrong.

Is a no-filter bowl good for beginners?

It can work, but a sponge-filtered aquarium gives beginners more biological and oxygenation margin.

Can I keep fish in the bowl too?

For most nano bowls, adding fish increases both predation and bioload. Keep the setup shrimp-focused.

Can I seal the bowl with a lid?

Use a cover if needed for evaporation or safety, but do not create an airtight system. Gas exchange remains essential.
