Water changes are necessary maintenance, but in a nano shrimp tank a small bucket can represent a large percentage of the entire system. The safest approach is to match replacement water closely and avoid sudden chemistry swings.
A mixed Skittles colony does not require separate water changes for each color. If red, blue, yellow and orange Neocaridina share one aquarium, they also share the same temperature, mineral balance and osmotic changes.

How Much Water Should You Change?
There is no universal percentage that fits every aquarium. A lightly stocked mature tank with low nitrate may need a different schedule than a heavily fed breeding colony. In nano tanks, smaller routine changes are often easier to match than occasional dramatic resets.
Base frequency on nitrate trend, feeding, plant growth, stocking and source-water consistency rather than using a percentage as a ritual.
Match Temperature
Replacement water should be close to the tank temperature. A sudden cold or hot influx can stress shrimp and may coincide with molting activity. Use a thermometer rather than estimating by touch when the difference may be meaningful.
Match GH, KH and TDS
If source water is stable tap water, periodically test it so seasonal or municipal changes do not surprise you. If you remineralize RO water, mix it completely outside the aquarium and confirm GH, KH and TDS before use.

Top Off Evaporation Correctly
Evaporation removes mostly water while leaving dissolved minerals behind. If you repeatedly top off evaporation with mineralized water, TDS and hardness can creep upward. Where appropriate, use low-mineral top-off water while using properly mineralized water for actual water changes.
The exact approach depends on your source water and setup, so track the tank rather than following a universal rule blindly.
Siphon Carefully Around Shrimplets
Use a small hose, white bucket or fine guard so you can spot babies accidentally siphoned out. Dense moss and substrate edges can hide tiny shrimplets. Slow flow gives them time to move.

Refill Slowly
Pouring a bucket directly into a nano tank can blast shrimp, disturb substrate and create a localized chemistry change. Add replacement water slowly with tubing, a small pump, a diffuser or a gentle pour onto hardscape.
Do Not Deep-Clean Everything at Once
A water change does not need to coincide with replacing all filter media, scrubbing all surfaces and aggressively vacuuming the entire substrate. Preserve established biological filtration and biofilm.
Watch the Colony After Maintenance
Normal shrimp should resume grazing after a brief disturbance. Widespread frantic swimming, loss of balance, sudden hiding or multiple failed molts after a water change suggests a mismatch or contamination problem.

Should I stop water changes because shrimp molt afterward?
No. Stable maintenance is healthier than allowing waste to accumulate. The goal is to make replacement water similar enough that maintenance is not a major shock.
Can I use straight RO water for a water change?
Not as a normal replacement for mineralized Neocaridina water. RO used for water changes is typically remineralized to the intended GH and KH before addition.
What if my tap water changes?
Test it, prepare replacement water accordingly and make corrections gradually rather than exposing the tank to a large unexpected shift.
