A Skittles shrimp nano tank should be biologically cycled and biologically mature before you add a mixed Neocaridina colony. Those are related goals, but they are not exactly the same.
Cycling establishes microbes that convert toxic ammonia into nitrite and then nitrate. Maturity adds the thin layers of algae, bacteria, fungi and microorganisms we call biofilm—the constant grazing resource shrimp use between supplemental feedings.

Step 1: Build the Tank Before You Build the Colony
Add substrate, hardscape, plants and the filter before livestock. A sponge filter is especially useful because it gives nitrifying bacteria and shrimp-grazing biofilm a large surface while keeping the intake safe for future babies.

Step 2: Provide an Ammonia Source
A new aquarium needs a controlled source of nitrogen so the microbial community can develop before livestock produce waste. Fishless cycling avoids exposing shrimp to ammonia and nitrite. Use a measured ammonia source or another established cycling method and test the water instead of guessing based on elapsed time.
There is no universal rule that every aquarium becomes safe on day 7, day 14 or day 30. Temperature, pH, inoculation, filter surface area and ammonia input all affect the process.

Step 3: Test Ammonia, Nitrite and Nitrate
During cycling, ammonia should rise and then fall as the first microbial population develops. Nitrite often appears next and should eventually also fall to zero. Nitrate can accumulate as the downstream product, although plants may use some of it.
Before stocking, the system should process the expected ammonia input without leaving detectable ammonia or nitrite. A single zero reading without a known ammonia challenge does not prove the filter is ready.
Step 4: Give Biofilm Time to Develop
This is where shrimp cycling differs from simply preparing a tank for a hardy fish. Research on Neocaridina has found biofilm-supported systems can sustain the shrimp life cycle and improve juvenile performance. Allow safe green film, microbial coatings and mature surfaces to develop instead of sterilizing every piece of decor.

Step 5: Stabilize the Water Before Stocking
Confirm temperature, pH, GH and KH after the cycle is complete. Do not make a large last-minute chemistry adjustment on the day shrimp arrive. Your goal is a stable destination that can accept the new colony without immediately needing emergency maintenance.

How Long Should You Wait?
Test results, not the calendar, determine whether the nitrogen cycle is established. For shrimp, there is also value in allowing visible maturity beyond the minimum point at which ammonia and nitrite reach zero. A tank that has had time to develop biofilm is usually more forgiving to a new colony than a sterile-looking aquarium that finished cycling yesterday.

Can I add all Skittles colors at once?
If the tank is mature and the planned stocking level is reasonable, a mixed assortment can be introduced together after acclimation.
Can I cycle without a filter?

Treat it as a water-quality problem immediately: stop overfeeding, identify dead material or filter disruption, verify testing, and use appropriate water changes without causing a second large parameter shock.
