Aquarium-safe driftwood and botanicals can be excellent additions to a mixed Neocaridina tank. They create textured grazing surface, hiding places and slowly decomposing organic material that supports biofilm.
The important qualifier is aquarium-safe. Do not place unidentified treated lumber, chemically preserved wood, painted decor or roadside material into a shrimp tank simply because it looks natural.

Why Shrimp Love Driftwood
Wood offers a large irregular surface that quickly becomes coated in microbial films. Shrimp spend hours grazing these surfaces. Crevices also provide refuge after molts and give juveniles places to avoid larger tank mates.

What Botanicals Can Add
Dried aquarium-safe leaves, seed pods and similar botanicals break down gradually. During decomposition they become feeding grounds for microorganisms. Indian almond leaves are widely used in shrimp keeping for this reason.
Botanicals can also release tannins and other dissolved organic compounds that tint water amber. The color is not dirt; it is a natural consequence of plant material leaching compounds into the water.

Can Wood Lower pH?
Wood and botanicals can contribute organic acids, but the actual pH effect depends heavily on KH and the amount of material used. In moderately buffered water, a small piece of driftwood usually does not crash pH by itself. In very low-KH water, larger additions deserve more caution.

How to Prepare Driftwood
Use wood sold for aquarium use or a species you can positively identify as safe. Rinse debris thoroughly. Soaking helps waterlog floating pieces and removes some tannins if you prefer clearer water. Boiling smaller pieces can accelerate waterlogging, but it is not necessary for every commercial aquarium wood.
How Many Botanicals Should You Add?
Start modestly. A nano tank can be overwhelmed by a large amount of decaying material more easily than a large aquarium. Add botanicals gradually and observe oxygenation, water clarity and how quickly the colony consumes or breaks them down.

White Biofilm on New Wood
Fresh driftwood often develops a soft white bacterial or fungal-looking film. In many new aquariums this is a normal colonization stage and shrimp frequently graze it. It is not the same thing as the green external growth sometimes seen attached directly to a shrimp.

Do Botanicals Replace Food?
No. They supplement the ecological food web and grazing surface. A growing colony still benefits from balanced supplemental foods, especially when shrimp density becomes high.

Low-Tech and No-Filter Setups

FAQ
Are tannins harmful to Neocaridina?
Normal tannins from aquarium-safe botanicals are not inherently harmful. Monitor pH and water chemistry rather than judging by amber color alone.
Can I use wood from outside?
Only when you can identify the species and know it has not been exposed to pesticides, preservatives, pollution or saltwater contamination. Commercial aquarium wood is the simpler choice.
Should I remove leaves when they skeletonize?
Not necessarily. Shrimp often continue grazing decomposing leaf material. Remove excess if it begins to accumulate faster than the system can process it.
