How to Start Your Own Freshwater Shrimp Aquarium
Starting a shrimp aquarium is easier than you think. Follow these simple steps to build a thriving freshwater shrimp habitat:
1. Choose Your Tank
A 10-gallon tank is a great size to start with. It offers stability in water parameters and enough room for a small colony to grow.
2. Add a Filter and Heater (Optional)
Sponge filters are perfect as they’re gentle and won’t suck in baby shrimp. Depending on the species, you may or may not need a heater (Neocaridina do well in room temperature; Caridina prefer warmer water).
3. Cycle Your Tank
Before adding shrimp, cycle your tank for at least 4 weeks to build up beneficial bacteria. This prevents dangerous ammonia and nitrite spikes.
4. Pick a Substrate
Dark substrates make shrimp colors pop. Caridina shrimp prefer active substrates that help lower pH.
5. Add Live Plants
Mosses, ferns, and floating plants provide cover and surface area for biofilm, a natural shrimp food source.
6. Introduce Your Shrimp
Acclimate slowly using the drip method. Start with beginner-friendly shrimp like Cherry or Blue Dream Shrimp.
7. Maintain Your Tank
Perform regular water changes, avoid copper-based meds, and feed sparingly to avoid polluting the water.

FAQs About Freshwater Aquarium Shrimp
Are aquarium shrimp easy to care for?
Absolutely! Most freshwater shrimp are low-maintenance and perfect for beginners. They thrive in clean, cycled tanks with stable water conditions and minimal intervention.
What shrimp are best for beginners?
Cherry Shrimp, Blue Velvet Shrimp, and Amano Shrimp are great starter options. They're hardy, colorful, and adapt well to different tank setups.
What do aquarium shrimp eat?
They feed on algae, biofilm, decaying plant matter, and specialized shrimp pellets. Blanched vegetables like spinach or zucchini also make great treats.
How long do aquarium shrimp live?
Most shrimp live 1 to 2 years. With proper care, Amano shrimp may live up to 3 years or more.
How many shrimp should I get?
Shrimp are social animals and do better in groups. A good starting colony is 10 to 20 shrimp, depending on your tank size.
Where can I buy aquarium shrimp online?
You can order directly from Shrimp Up Aquatics. We ship high-quality, tank-raised shrimp to your doorstep with a live arrival guarantee.
How many shrimp can I keep in a 100-liter tank?
With proper filtration and no aggressive tank mates, you can safely house 50 to 100 shrimp. If you’re also keeping fish, aim for the lower end of that range.
Can shrimp live with other fish?
Yes, but stick to peaceful nano fish like rasboras, small tetras, or otocinclus. Avoid larger or aggressive species that might see shrimp as food.
Do shrimp need a filter?
Yes, but gentle filtration is best. Sponge filters are ideal as they keep the water clean without sucking in baby shrimp.
How do I know if my shrimp are healthy?
Look for active behavior, bright coloring, and regular molting. Avoid shrimp that appear sluggish, discolored, or have trouble moving.
Can shrimp breed in my tank?
Yes! Neocaridina shrimp, in particular, breed easily in home aquariums. Provide good food, hiding spots, and stable water to encourage reproduction.
