Pack Size

Zebra Nerite Snails are striking freshwater aquarium snails known for their bold dark-and-gold striped shells. They are peaceful algae grazers that spend much of the day cleaning aquarium glass, rocks, driftwood, and other hard surfaces.

Available pack sizes: 3, 6, 12, or 24 Zebra Nerite Snails.
Shell color, stripe thickness, pattern, and size naturally vary from snail to snail. Photos represent the general appearance of the livestock you can expect.

Why Keep Zebra Nerite Snails?

Excellent natural grazers
Constantly browse algae and biofilm from aquarium surfaces.
Bold striped shells
Distinctive dark bands over yellow, gold, brown, or olive shell tones make each snail unique.
Peaceful tank mate
A great choice for freshwater shrimp tanks and many calm community aquariums.
No freshwater population boom
Nerite larvae require brackish or marine conditions to develop, so they do not establish multiplying colonies in standard freshwater tanks.

Zebra Nerite Snail Care

Care Level Easy to moderate
Adult Size Typically around 0.5–1 inch
Temperature 72–78°F
pH 7.2–8.2
GH 6–12 dGH
KH 3–8 dKH
Diet Algae, biofilm, and supplemental algae-based foods when natural growth is limited
Temperament Peaceful

Zebra Nerites do best in established aquariums with stable water chemistry, mineral content, and a steady supply of natural algae or biofilm. Keeping calcium and mineral levels adequate supports healthy shell growth and helps reduce shell erosion.

Feeding

Zebra Nerite Snails are famous for grazing algae from aquarium surfaces, but they should not be expected to live indefinitely in a completely spotless tank. When natural algae and biofilm become scarce, supplement with algae wafers, spirulina-based foods, or other snail-safe foods.

Tank Mates

Zebra Nerite Snails are peaceful and work especially well in shrimp aquariums and community tanks with non-aggressive fish. Avoid known snail eaters or animals that may crush, nip, or harass them.

Breeding & White Egg Capsules

Female nerite snails may leave small white egg capsules on glass, wood, rocks, or equipment. These eggs do not develop into baby snails in a normal freshwater aquarium because the larval stage requires brackish or marine conditions.

Acclimation

Acclimate slowly to reduce sudden changes in temperature, pH, and mineral content. Once introduced, place the snail upright against a hard surface. Nerites may remain still for a while after shipping as they adjust.

Important: Avoid copper-based medications unless the product is specifically confirmed safe for snails and other aquarium invertebrates. Maintain stable, dechlorinated water and avoid abrupt parameter swings.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will every Zebra Nerite Snail have the same stripes?

No. Stripe width, direction, color intensity, and shell tone vary naturally, so each snail has its own pattern.

Are Zebra Nerite Snails safe with shrimp?

Yes. Zebra Nerites are peaceful grazers and are commonly kept with freshwater shrimp.

Do Zebra Nerite Snails reproduce in freshwater?

They may lay eggs, but the larvae do not complete development under normal freshwater conditions.

Do I need to feed them?

Yes when natural algae and biofilm are limited. Supplemental feeding is especially important in very clean or newly established aquariums.
