How to Get Rid of Hydra in a Red Cherry Shrimp Tank Safely

Hydra are tiny freshwater cnidarians that attach to aquarium glass, plants, hardscape, and equipment. Under magnification they look like miniature anemones: a narrow stalk topped with several moving tentacles. In a Red Cherry Shrimp tank, the main concern is not healthy adults—it is newly hatched shrimplets and other very small prey that can contact the tentacles.

Hydra possess stinging cells used to immobilize small organisms. A few hydra do not mean the colony is about to collapse, but a visible population deserves attention, especially in a breeding tank.

How to Identify Hydra in a Shrimp Tank

Hydra remain attached at one end and extend tentacles into the water. They may contract into a tiny nub when disturbed, then extend again. Depending on species and diet, they can appear white, beige, brown, or greenish.

Why Do Hydra Suddenly Appear?

Hydra can hitchhike into aquariums on plants, livestock, decor, live foods, or water transferred from another tank. Once present, abundant tiny food can support rapid reproduction. Heavy feeding—especially fine powdered foods or foods that remain suspended—can unintentionally feed both the shrimp and the hydra.

This is why a hydra outbreak often responds to a feeding reset. It does not mean starving the shrimp. It means eliminating excess food that lingers after the colony has eaten.

Are Hydra Dangerous to Adult Red Cherry Shrimp?

Healthy adult Neocaridina are generally too large for a small hydra to capture as prey, although contact with tentacles may irritate them. Newly hatched shrimp are much smaller and are the more realistic concern. If your tank contains lots of shrimplets, intervene sooner rather than waiting for the hydra population to grow.

Step 1: Reduce Excess Feeding

Cut back the amount of supplemental food, not the quality of the shrimp's environment. Mature tanks contain biofilm and microorganisms that Red Cherry Shrimp graze throughout the day. Remove uneaten food after feeding and temporarily avoid broadcast-feeding more powder than the colony can consume.

Step 2: Remove Accessible Hydra Manually

Hydra on removable decor can sometimes be addressed outside the aquarium. On glass, careful siphoning can physically remove individuals. Avoid scraping large numbers into the water and leaving fragments behind; hydra have impressive regenerative ability.

When siphoning near baby shrimp, use a fine guard or controlled tubing so shrimplets are not accidentally removed. Inspect moss and dense plants closely because hydra can be difficult to see among fine leaves.

Step 3: Review New Plants and Shared Equipment

Live plants are excellent for Cherry Shrimp because they create surface area for biofilm, but wet plants can also transport unwanted organisms. Inspect and quarantine new plants when practical, and do not move nets or siphons from a pest tank directly into another shrimp aquarium.

Step 4: Use Chemical Treatment Only When Necessary

Persistent hydra outbreaks are sometimes treated with aquarium products containing compounds such as fenbendazole or betel-nut-derived ingredients. These can also affect snails and other invertebrates. Never assume “shrimp-safe” means “safe for every animal in the tank.”

Use a product labeled for the organism you are treating, follow the manufacturer’s dosing directions, and remove incompatible ornamental snails when the label warns of risk. After treatment, remove dead organisms and monitor ammonia. Should You Do a Huge Water Change to Remove Hydra?

A water change can remove dissolved waste, but it does not reliably eliminate organisms attached throughout the aquarium. A very large, poorly matched change can also stress shrimp.   • Feed amounts the shrimp can actually consume.
  • Quarantine or inspect new plants and livestock.
  • Avoid transferring water and wet tools between tanks.

Will hydra kill all my shrimp?

No. Adult Red Cherry Shrimp are generally much larger than hydra prey. The bigger concern is tiny shrimplets and other microscopic or juvenile animals.

Can I starve hydra without feeding my shrimp?

You do not need to stop all feeding indefinitely. Reduce excess supplemental food and rely more heavily on mature biofilm while monitoring the colony.
