When different color Neocaridina shrimp interbreed, the result is genetically mixed offspring whose appearance is much less predictable than the parents. A red shrimp crossed with a blue shrimp does not reliably produce purple. A yellow crossed with an orange does not guarantee one specific intermediate shade.
Commercial color lines were created through generations of selective breeding. Crossing those lines reshuffles inherited traits, and later generations can increasingly show translucent, brownish or greenish-brown wild-type characteristics.

Why Color Crosses Are Hard to Predict
Shrimp hobby genetics are often reduced to simple charts, but real Neocaridina color inheritance can depend on the ancestry of the lines being crossed. Two shrimp that look similar may carry different combinations behind that visible phenotype.
Because public information on the exact inheritance of every commercial morph is limited, it is better to treat mixed breeding as a probability problem rather than promise a specific result from a specific color pair.
What the First Generation May Look Like
The first mixed generation can include offspring that resemble one parent, look intermediate, show unusual patterning, or appear less saturated. The exact result depends on the strains involved and what those parents carry genetically.
This is different from temporary color fading in an individual shrimp. Interbreeding changes the inheritance of the offspring, not the adult parents.

Why Wild-Type Traits Often Return

Absolutely. Mixed tanks can produce unusual markings, translucent bodies, stripes, rili-like breaks and unexpected shades. The issue is not that the offspring are defective; it is that they are not predictably true-breeding commercial strains.
If your aquarium is for display, that unpredictability may be part of the appeal. If you sell shrimp under a specific color name, however, keep breeding lines separated unless you have stabilized the line through selection.

What Happens After Several Generations?
Each generation adds more recombination. Without culling or line selection, the colony can drift away from the original bright assortment. This is normal genetic mixing, not evidence that the water is turning shrimp brown.

Can You Create a New Stable Color?
