Can You Keep Mystery Snails and Nerites with Skittles Shrimp?

Mystery snails and nerite snails can generally live with Skittles shrimp because neither is an active predator of healthy Neocaridina. They occupy the same aquarium peacefully in many setups and can add movement and algae-grazing activity without the shrimplet predation risk associated with fish.

Compatibility still depends on water quality, stocking and feeding. Snails are not biologically invisible; they produce waste and can compete with shrimp for prepared foods.

Mystery Snails With Skittles Shrimp

Mystery snails are larger, active snails that explore glass, substrate and hardscape. They will consume prepared foods, soft algae and decaying organic material. Because of their size and appetite, they add noticeably more bioload than a few small shrimp.

In a nano tank, account for the snail when planning water changes and feeding rather than assuming the system can support unlimited animals.

Nerite Snails With Skittles Shrimp

Nerites are popular algae grazers and generally leave healthy shrimp alone. Their eggs may appear as hard white dots on decor in freshwater. Those eggs do not typically develop into a growing freshwater nerite population because the larvae of common aquarium nerites require different conditions.

Will Snails Eat Shrimplets?

Mystery and nerite snails are not active hunters of healthy baby shrimp. They may consume a dead animal they encounter, which can make it look as though the snail caused the death. That is scavenging, not proof of predation.

If maximum baby survival is the goal, snails are generally a much lower-risk companion than fish. Compare our fish tank-mate guide for the difference.

Shared Water Requirements

Both shrimp and snails need adequate mineral availability for their hard external structures. Extremely soft or acidic water can be challenging for snail shells. A typical stable Neocaridina setup with moderate GH and KH often works well for both.

Use our GH and KH guide for multi-color Neocaridina as your shrimp baseline and watch snail shells for erosion.

Feeding Competition

A large mystery snail can reach an algae wafer and cover it before the shrimp finish. Spread food across multiple small locations or provide appropriately sized portions so the shrimp still have access. Do not solve competition by massively overfeeding the aquarium.

Medication Warning

Many invertebrates are sensitive to treatments intended for fish. Copper-based medications are especially concerning. Before treating a shared shrimp-and-snail aquarium, verify that the product is safe for both groups.

For copper specifically, read our Skittles shrimp fertilizer and copper guide.

FAQ

Can mystery snails crush shrimp?

Healthy shrimp are fast and normally move away. Accidental contact is not the same as predation.

Will nerites reproduce in my freshwater shrimp tank?

They may lay eggs, but common aquarium nerite larvae generally do not complete development in ordinary freshwater conditions.

How many snails can I add?

Base stocking on tank size, algae availability, filtration and waste load rather than using a universal number.
