How to Care for Caridina Shrimp: Tank Setup & Maintenance Tips

Caridina shrimp are some of the most striking freshwater shrimp in the aquarium hobby, but they do best when the tank is designed around their needs from the beginning. Before You Start: Not Every Caridina Has the Same Requirements

Caridina is a large genus. Amano Shrimp are true Caridina, but they are much more adaptable than many ornamental Bee and Taiwan Bee-type shrimp.

1. Choose a Tank Size That Makes Stability Easier

Caridina shrimp do not need a huge aquarium, but larger water volume is generally easier to keep stable.

4. Understand GH, KH, pH, and TDS

Caridina keeping becomes much easier when you understand what the numbers mean instead of simply chasing targets.

GH

KH

TDS

5. Consider RO or RO/DI Water

Reverse-osmosis water is popular for sensitive Caridina because it gives the keeper control.

RO or RO/DI water begins with very little dissolved mineral content. You can then add a shrimp-specific remineralizer to build the water back to the desired GH and TDS without introducing unnecessary KH.

This is often more predictable than starting with hard tap water and repeatedly trying to reduce its hardness and pH.

If your tap water naturally fits the needs of your Caridina and stays consistent throughout the year, it may work. But always test your actual source water rather than assuming all tap water is similar.

6. Fully Cycle the Aquarium Before Adding Caridina

A Caridina aquarium should be fully cycled before shrimp are introduced.

Ammonia and nitrite should remain at zero, and the biological filter should be established.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency explains that ammonia can directly harm aquatic organisms and that pH and temperature influence ammonia toxicity.

Do not use shrimp to cycle the tank.

13. Do Not Over-Clean the Aquarium

A shrimp tank should be clean enough to maintain water quality but mature enough to provide natural grazing.

Remove excessive uneaten food and dead plant material. Clean mechanical filtration when necessary. Perform regular water changes.
